Nilakkottai was founded by Kulappa Nayaka of Vijayanagaram in 1366 A.D. He asked Lord Vishnu Devaraya Raya for permission and then construct a mud fort. At first, Makkala Nayaka ruled the fort, but his son Kulappa Nayaka took over later.
